Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. had a vision of a society motivated by the ideals of nonviolence, equality, and service to one another. On Monday, January 18, 2010, we can help fulfill Dr. King’s vision by making it a day of service in our own communities.

Inspired by President Obama’s national “call to service” last year, the 2009 King Day of Service was the largest in history, with more than 1 million volunteers participating in 13,000 projects nationwide.

On October 24, volunteers around the country will take part in Make a Difference Day, the 19th annual national day of community service. Jointly sponsored by HandsOn Network and USA WEEKEND, Make a Difference Day inspires hundreds of good deeds, which are selected for recognition and charitable donations (such as through the Newman’s Own Foundation) the following April. September 11, 2009 marks the first National Day of Service and Remembrance—for details on how to organize related events in your area, go to HandsOn Network, or to tap into what’s happening nationally, go to Serve.gov.

September 14-21: Mozilla Service Week will match thousands of “techie” volunteers around the world with non-profit organizations in need of help with IT, web design, programming, blogging and much more. If you’re an organization that needs help, or a techie who can provide it, go to Mozilla Service Week.
