Preserve Hawaiʻi Goes Social

As of January 2012, Preserve Hawaiʻi has moved all of our outreach efforts to social media—you’ll find the latest volunteer projects of our partner organizations through our regular Facebook and Twitter dispatches (see links below).

Since we’re not doing monthly online calendars anymore, we also encourage you to check out the monthly postings at our partner Malama Hawaiʻi’s website by clicking here, then on Jobs/Volunteer.

Fall Volunteering Update

Here’s just a highlight of some exciting Fall volunteer happenings among the Preserve Hawaiʻi network partners throughout the islands …

Oʻahu
A monk seal pup was recently born on the North Shore! Volunteers are needed for “pup sitting” and ongoing monitoring—ideal for students and island residents. For more info, contact woolwahine@hawaiiantel.net at the Hawaiian Monk Seal Response Team Oʻahu, www.hmsrto.org

Maui
Turtles are hatching on Lahaina and Hoʻokipa beaches, and Hawaiʻi Wildlife Fund is in need of volunteers to help watch over the nests—shifts are available both day and night; training is provided. For more info, contact mauihawksbills@gmail.com, www.wildhawaii.org

Hawaiʻi Island
The Hawaiʻi Island School Garden Network has opportunities for volunteers to help with elementary school garden classes every weekday. Click on the Hawaiʻi Island calendar here—www.preservehawaii.org/calendars—and look for HISGN postings in your area.

Kauaʻi
An easily accessible volunteer opportunity for both visitors and residents on Kauaʻi is at one of the National Tropical Botanical Garden’s beautiful sites—the volunteer program is described in detail here—ntbg.org/donate/volunteer.php—with workdays scheduled throughout each week.

Island-wide
Kupu Hawaiʻi and Americorps are giving educational awards of $1,000 to interns (age 17+) who volunteer for 300 hours in a conservation-related field. Awards can be used to pay off student loans or for further education. Learn more about the awards by clicking here, or contact acprograms@kupuhawaii.org

We’re thrilled to announce the support of the Hawaiʻi Tourism Authority’s Natural Resources Program in 2011 to get the volunteering information on this website into the hands of those who’ll use it most—volunteers like you! Plus over 300 leaders in the youth and visitor industries, which includes outreach to Hawaiʻi’s public and private high schools and universities.

We’re still seeking matching funds, however, to meet the Tourism Authority’s grant requirements. Can you help by making a small donation? Any amount is appreciated, and will help ensure the continuation of Preserve Hawaiʻi’s 2011 outreach efforts, such as our new online Volunteering Calendars.

All donations are tax-deductible through our 501c3, and can be made via PayPal at the Tri-Isle RC&D website (scroll down to “Preserve Hawai’i,” then click donate).

January 17 Day of Service

January 17, 2011, will mark the 25th anniversary of the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. holiday.

Dr. King had a vision of a society motivated by the ideals of nonviolence, equality, and service to one another. On January 17, we can help fulfill this vision by making it a day of service in our own communities.

Simplify the Holidays

Simplify the holidays with Kanu Hawaiʻi and Kokua Hawaiʻi Foundation. Make a commitment (or many!) to benefit local nonprofits, give alternative gifts, and reduce waste … Last year, commitments like these added up to big impact: More than 13 tons of waste was kept out of landfills and incinerators, 8 tons of greenhouse gases prevented, enough paper to save 215 trees, thousands of dollars donated and nearly 1,000 hours of service to local charities, and almost 1.5 tons of containers recycled.

Support the Ahupua’a Initiative with Your Vote

There are lots of ways to support Hawaiʻi’s environmental organizations and agencies—by volunteering, through donation, even your vote … This month, the Ahupuaʻa Initiative, in collaboration with UH Manoa, is aiming for a $250,000 grant from Pepsi. A win will fund their pilot project to protect Hawaiʻi’s watersheds from pollution through a wireless monitoring network.

You can help them win by voting daily throughout November—they need to make it into the top 2 to get the grant!
