The goal is to provide a safe space to explore Hawaiian language with family and friends. This Friday, they’ll be playing cards: learning basic sentence structures, numbers, colors, and suits. No previous experience necessary—but once the evening begins, they ask that everyone refrain from speaking anything but Hawaiian. For more information, email kahonuamomona@gmail.com or call (808) 553-8353.

Last week, Ka Honua Momona held a kupuna cookout at Uncle Herbert’s hale, with Aliʻi Fishpond in the distance—the menu was Uncle’s delicious homemade fish soup and poke. About a dozen kupuna joined in for lunch while sharing their beautiful moʻolelo (stories) about learning to gather limu and fish from their own kupuna. Another cookout is in the works for this fall …

Ka Honua Momona hosts lots of great activities at Aliʻi Fishpond—this August, Uncle Calvin Hoe brought out a group of students from Hakipuʻu Learning Center for a bamboo workshop. Uncle Cal taught everyone an oli, a hula, and how to make bamboo implements, like the nose flutes seen here. There were about 40 participants, and everyone who made a nose flute was able to take it home with them that day. Uncle Cal’s brother, Uncle Herbert (who runs KHMI’s Ai Pono program), made everyone a yummy, healthy lunch from Molokaʻi products.

Last week, they hosted Molokaʻi High’s immersion school, O Hina i Ka Malama. The students helped take water quality samples, collected different types of limu (seaweed), moved silt around in the pond, pulled some of the smaller mangrove, and explored the pond and mauka (toward the mountain) of the pond.

Come out and join them at the fishpond this Saturday! For more information, email kahonuamomona@gmail.com or call 808.553.8353.
